A renal ultrasound, also known as a kidney ultrasound, is a noninvasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the kidneys and bladder. It's a safe and painless way to help diagnose and treat kidney and bladder conditions. What it's used for: - To investigate symptoms like kidney stones, poor kidney function, urinary tract infections, incontinence, and blood in urine - To assess the size, shape, and location of the kidneys - To assess blood flow to the kidneys How it's performed: - A small probe called a transducer is moved across the abdomen - Gel is placed on the skin to help the sound waves travel through the body - The probe collects the sound waves that bounce back - A computer uses the sound waves to create an image
