A prostate ultrasound, also known as a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), is a non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to create images of the prostate. It can help diagnose prostate cancer and other conditions. What it's used for: - To check the size, shape, and location of the prostate - To look for abnormal areas in the prostate - To help diagnose prostate cancer - To help find the cause of infertility - To help stage and treat rectal cancer - To help place a needle for a biopsy - To help place radiation seeds for prostate cancer treatment How it's performed: - A small, hand-held transducer is inserted into the rectum - Sound waves are sent through the rectum and into the prostate - A computer analyzes the echoes to create an image
