A musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK ultrasound) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create pictures of joints, muscles, and other soft tissues. It can help diagnose injuries, chronic conditions, and more. What it's used for: - Diagnosing muscle tears, strains, and tendonitis - Evaluating arthritis, bursitis, and joint problems - Assessing the severity of an injury - Determining if surgery is needed - Evaluating how an injury is healing - Guiding injections and procedures How it's performed: - You lie on an exam table or sit in a chair - A small amount of gel is applied to the area being examined - A sonographer uses a wand-like device called a transducer to glide over the skin - Images of the tissues are sent to a computer
