A chest X-ray is an imaging test that uses radiation to create pictures of the inside of your chest. It's a common and quick way to help diagnose conditions affecting the heart, lungs, and chest wall. What it shows: - The size, shape, and location of the heart and lungs - The condition of blood vessels, such as the aorta and pulmonary arteries and veins - The presence of calcium in the heart or blood vessels - The presence of air, infection, or fluid around the lungs What it's used for: - Diagnosing injuries or diseases that affect the chest - Helping diagnose shortness of breath, persistent cough, fever, chest pain, or injury - Helping diagnose and monitor treatment for lung conditions such as pneumonia, emphysema, and cancer
